Family Days Out

Choose from our selection of attractions that offer a great family day out.

Whilst enjoying the beautiful area that is the Lake District head up to Honister Slate Mine the last working slate mine in England.  Take a guided tour deep underground and then if you are feeling brave enough try out the Via Ferratta.  Refreshments are available at the Sky Hi Cafe plus you can spend time browsing through the gift shop and showroom, where you can pick up anything from a house number plaque to an elegant slate water feature for your garden.  There’s something for all the family at Honister.

For a day out with a difference experience the amazing feet of engineering at Anderton Boat Lift in Northwich, step aboard the Edwin Clark for a 30 minute journey through the lift.  After your trip enjoy the two storey visitor centre with an exhibition telling the story of the lift plus pick up a souvenir in the gift shop, then enjoy a waterside picnic, purchase on site at the café or bring your own!

Deep in the Rossendale Valley spend a day at Helmshore Mills Textile Museum and learn the story of the Lancashire textile industry from the 18th century to the modern day.  Hands on interactives and videos help to tell the story but it is the demonstrations with real machinery that capture the essence of the past. Stock up in the shop with traditional and contemporary gifts and enjoy the fresh food made on the premises at the Coffee Mill Café.

Located on the historic site of the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station, housed in five listed buildings, MOSI’s amazing galleries and outstanding collections tell the story of Manchester’s scientific and industrial past, present and future.  It’s a must for a family day out.  Favourites include crawling through the Victorian sewer, a steam train ride on the replica of Robert Stephenson’s 1830 Planet locomotive and planetarium shows!
