Lancashire’s Family History societies

There are number of family history societies covering the ancient county of Lancashire who are able to provide specialist advice in your researches, the main societies are:

Cumbria FHS  who’s remit includes the Furness and Cartmel peninsulas – that part of the ancient county north of Morecambe Bay, now in Cumbria.

Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society which covers the modern county, including the part of the old West Riding now in Lancashire and the Blackpool and Blackburn & Darwen unitary authority areas.

Liverpool & South West Lancashire FHS covering the West Derby hundred – an area running approximately from Southport to Warrington, including Wigan and Ormskirk.

Manchester and Lancashire FHS who’s area is the part of Greater Manchester originally in the ancient county of Lancashire.

The Lancashire, Liverpool and Manchester societies all hold meetings at a number of branches around their areas.

In addition to the ‘big four’ societies there are a number of smaller, local groups:

North Meols (Southport) FHS

Ormskirk & District FHS

Details of family history societies outside Lancashire can be found via the Federation of Family History Societies’ website.

Specialised local knowledge may also be available from local history societies in your area of interest. These organisations are listed on the Lancashire Local History Federation web site.

Two more academic organisations hold regular study days and conferences which are of interest to family historians:

Centre for North West Regional Studies at Lancaster University and the Institute of Local and Family History at the University of Central Lancashire.

The Society of Genealogists is the national society with a well stocked library in London.
