Fans of historic transport are in for a treat on Sunday 20 November when members of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club come to Ellenroad Steam Museum in Newhey.
And in honour of the array of around 20 wonderful vehicles that will be on display, the museum will be laying on a special steaming day to give visitors the chance to marvel at its cotton mill steam engines in action.
The coal fired boiler will be raising steam to power the world’s largest mill engine, Victoria and Alexandra, and also the 1842 Whitelees beam engine and the 1907 Marsden engine.
Tim Nuttall, Tourism Officer for Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Ellenroad Steam Museum is a fascinating place to visit at any time. But to go on a steaming day when there will also be so many magnificent motor vehicles to admire really is an event not to be missed.
“It will be a superb celebration of Britain’s industrial heritage and a great day out for the whole family.”
The event has been organised with the assistance of Beryl Pickup, a local member of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club.
Mrs Pickup said: “Several friends of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club get together each year for a special drive around one member’s home patch. This year it’s my turn to play host and I knew that Ellenroad Steam Museum would be an ideal meeting place after the drive.
“To have the engines in steam is a real bonus. Members will be travelling from as far as Norfolk, Devon, Cornwall, and Scotland. Weather permitting there could be up to 20 cars of all ages and visitors to Ellenroad are welcome to look them over.”
The museum will be open from 12 noon until 4pm and the cars will be arriving at 2pm and staying until nearly 4pm.
